Although smart metering has received widespread press coverage, the demand for "Home Area Network" (HAN) energy management solutions has attracted hundreds of startups as well as large corporations. The media and the market have noted full-scale announcements and entry from companies such as Cisco, GE Energy, and Verizon. Many believe that the primary interest of these large companies is the projection that there could be 20 million HAN-enabled households worldwide by the end of 2013. This panel explores the computing demand of a HAN "inside the house" and the opportunities that exist for leveraging the vast amounts of information that will be available to both the customer and utility.
