The New Prosumer

Utilities continue to look for new energy sources to build their customer base. One utility in Texas has approached the search for energy sources in another way.

Instead of more of the same, Austin Energy has built a conservation power plant, replacing a 500 MW coal plant. This municipally-owned electric utility is now working on a second 700 MWs of savings. They are also looking for a power plant's worth of distributed generation and, in the process, implementing new strategies to change their customers into prosumers.

Roger Duncan

General Manager

Austin Energy

Recognized by Business Week as one of the “Top 20 Individual Carbon Reducers” in the world, Roger Duncan is the general manager of Austin Energy, the municipal utility in Austin, Texas.  It is the 9th largest U.S. public power utility, serving a population of one million with low-cost, reliable power, and is nationally recognized for some of the most advanced and successful energy efficiency, Green Building and renewable energy programs in the nation.

Roger’s two decades in city government include two terms on city council and his years as director of the environmental department for the City of Austin. He joined Austin Energy in 1998 as vice president for conservation, renewables and environmental policy. As deputy general manager, he was responsible for AE’s award-winning Green Building program, distributed energy services, energy efficiency, strategic planning, governmental relations, and air quality.

His professional associations include active involvement on the boards of the Alliance to Save Energy, the U. S. Department of Energy - State Energy Advisory Board, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, the Electric Drive Transportation Association, the Public Sustainability Partnership and the American Solar Energy Society.
